Back When I Was Younger

I know, I know. OK 10-12 years ago. That's along time, right? Anyway, I have been out of high school for 10 years, now that makes me feel old. OK, OK now to the point. Back when I was younger I thought I needed all the name brand clothes, I couldn't wear anything from Walmart let alone Goodwill or a thrift store. I now look back on that and wonder what was I thinking?

When we were in Florida it got me to really thinking. Why do people spend so much money on a name brands? Now don't think I am condemning you if you buy name brands, it's totally your thing if you do. Why do some people buy there toddlers $80 shoes that either they are going to ruin or grow out of in a couple months. I guess the point I am trying to get across is don't complain that you don't have any money but then turn around and buy something outrageous.

We don't make a lot of money. But we are making do with what we do make. We have nice clothes, cars and a roof over our heads. I wish I was smarter with my money a lot sooner in life then just starting a few years ago.  I wish I my parents would have instilled good money morals while I was growing up but instead once they got paid they blew all their money. Let me tell you, you really learn from watching your parents. I have done some stupid things with money. But I have two little girls that I don't want to do the same thing and that's why we have changed and still continuing to change our ways.

Back when I was younger I have never traveled but maybe two hours outside of the town I lived in. I want to be able to let me girls see the sites and make memories with them. Whether it be taking them to the beach or just to a Children's Museum a couple hours away.I want to save more money to make memories then spend it on their wardrobe. I want them to learn to save money and give to those who need it.  So the point is, my family might now be wearing name brand clothes or driving the latest cars, but we have each other and that's all that matters. I just wish I knew this when I was younger.

  1. Good post. I would never buy my kid $80 shoes, but I don't mind going to that persons garage sale and buying the shoes from them for a $1.00..lol. When I was younger, I was embarassed to go into a thrift store..not sure what I was thinking because now I can't live without them.

My husband provides very well for us, but we still try to live way under our means and teach our girls about money. For example, we have a $20 cable package, nothing extra on our cell phones (my husband uses a prepaid). You defintely get wiser when you get older..some people just choose not to use those smarts.
